watched the Houdini finale tonight
really enjoyed it overall, but the ending was the only part that really irked me. part of the extraordinary part of Houdini was that after the blows from Whitehead and from breaking his ankle a few days earlier, he went on with the show that evening anyways, through excruciating pain. he was in pain for days until he did one last show in Detroit, where he had a fever of 104°F and passed out mid performance, but regained consciousness and kept on going, because “the show must go on.”
in addition they made almost no allusions to what his wife did after he died. she held séances once a year on halloween to try to contact him for over ten years. additionally, they shared a codeword together, so she would always know whether a medium or spiritualist was lying to her. she never made contact with him beyond the grave.
overall beautiful show. but leaving out these two pieces left the ending not as powerful as it could have been.
